ഉർവി (Project Urvi)
Urvi means mother Earth. Ecorestoration is the goal of Urvi. We use notions of micro food forests to work with young people to rebuild the ecosystem. The community maintains the food forest’s responsibilities. The worst flood in the history of Kerala took 483 lives and cost an estimated US$ 56 billion in property damage in 2018. It was more or less a man-made disaster. Yet we are still not acting responsibly towards the environment. Are we waiting for even bigger catastrophes to teach us a lesson? Climate change is real and is visible in various parts of world in different forms.
When we look at the local reality, Kochi, known as the industrial capital of Kerala, is more vulnerable than others to climate change. It was one of the cities severely affected by both the 2018 and the 2019 floods . Due to the heavy presence of industries and concrete constructions, it did not have the ability to percolate the runoff water, which led to flooding. The increase in sea level rise is a threat to Kochi, as it borders the coast of the Arabian Sea. Projects are being proposed to restructure Kochi to survive the floods. Kochi, the “Queen of the Arabian Sea,” will disappear into the water by 2050 if our actions keep getting delayed.
Through Urvi we will be working with young minds to set up small patches of food forests to nurture the different edible plants that are indiginous.
